Simon - the Conductor

Simon is held in the highest regard by orchestral musicians around the world, having worked with many of the finest players from leading ensembles such as the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Slovak Sinfonietta. His work has been widely recognised through numerous recordings and international conducting prizes. In 2022, he won the inaugural international Orchestra’s Conductor competition, awarded by both the musicians and global audiences. Previous honours include the Orchestra Prize at the Bucharest Music Institute and a Diploma of Appreciation from the Slovak government for his contribution to international cultural relations.

After two decades as a professional violinist, Simon made a bold shift to conducting in 2011, launching his new career with Il Divo and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a high-profile London Coliseum recording, marking the start of an international conducting journey. In 2015, Simon was appointed Chief Conductor of the Slovak Sinfonietta (state chamber orchestra of Slovakia), where he has since continued regular visits as Principal Guest Conductor. He has also enjoyed a long-standing relationship as a guest conductor with the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, returning regularly since 2014 - one of only a few British (and the only Welsh) conductors to do so in the orchestra’s near 150-year history.

He has conducted in over 70 countries, performing a wide range of repertoire for audiences across the globe. He has appeared at world-renowned venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, London’s O2, and Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, collaborating with celebrated soloists such as Peter Donohoe, Nicholas Daniel, and Catrin Finch, as well as crossover artists including Il Divo, Lea Salonga, Alfie Boe, and rock/pop legends including Barry Manilow, Chris de Burgh, Johnny Mathis and Roger Daltrey.

Inspired by some of the greatest British conductors of the past such as Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir Henry Wood and Sir Malcom Sargent, Simon is also a passionate advocate for the vital role amateur orchestras play in the cultural life of their communities. In 2022-23, he served as conductor of the Oxford University Press Orchestra, and in 2023 was appointed Musical Director of the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the UK’s oldest amateur ensembles, whose past Musical Directors include the legendary founder of The Proms, Sir Henry Wood. Following in those footsteps, Simon brings the same care, ambition, and artistic integrity to amateur music-making as he does to professional engagements, believing that orchestras of all levels should be empowered to perform with passion, purpose, and pride. For him, working with non-professional musicians is not a side project - it’s a vital part of nurturing a lifelong relationship between communities and the music they create.

Simon is no stranger to the recording studio and has made numerous recordings both as a violinist and, more recently, as a conductor. He has recorded two live DVDs with the international vocal quartet Il Divo (Live in London and Live in Japan) with other highlights including The Shape of Freedom - compositions by the Greek composer Eleana Pavlea and Gloria - compositions by the young British film composer J.J. Hathaway. Due for release in 2026 is a concept album from the celebrated Chinese musician and artist Zuoxiao Zuzhou - an album of great classical favourites with poetic voiceover written and performed in Chinese by the artist. Alongside experience in the studio, Simon is also known for his ability to conduct live performances to film and cross-disciplinary performances with other art forms including concerts with artists, dancers and actors.

Simon - the Educator

Simon is a passionate advocate for the power of music to inspire, educate, and unite. Renowned for his ability to engage audiences of all ages, he transforms concerts into dynamic, inclusive experiences - often combining his role as conductor with that of presenter or compère to break down barriers and bring music to life. Equally at ease with intimate gatherings or large-scale audiences, he has led an array of interactive concerts and innovative workshops across schools, arts organisations, and corporate settings. Drawing on his skills as a conductor, violinist, and communicator, Simon uses everything from orchestral instruments to percussion and voice to explore creativity, teamwork, and expression. His work spans from special schools to executive team-building events, always with a focus on accessibility and connection. Recently, he has further deepened this commitment by studying Makaton, a language programme that supports those with communication challenges, expanding his ability to reach and include every participant.
